One Sky Community Services will host its 35th Anniversary and “Move To Include” Celebration on Thursday Nov. 8 at the Abenaqui Country Club in Rye, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
This is One Sky’s third annual “Move to Include” event, created to highlight and encourage a more enlightened understanding of the role those with Developmental Disabilities and Acquired Brain Disorders can play in our community. At this event we recognize 3 groups of individuals and organizations, who in their own way have demonstrated through their actions, what can be accomplished when we make an effort to include individuals with Developmental Disabilities into our community.
This year we are honoring three One Sky clients who have made significant progress this past year in their journey to personal fulfillment and inclusion in their community. Also being honoring is Seacoast Media Group, with their induction into the One Sky Circle of Caring for their unwavering support and contribution through their collaboration with One Sky in the publishing of monthly articles highlighting clients and their stories in an effort to dispel the misconceptions about Developmental Disabilities and encourage inclusion. Lastly, we are honoring two One Sky employees for achieving a milestone in their commitment and dedication to the individuals and families we serve.
“The individuals we serve are no different than anyone else,” says Chris Muns, One Sky’s Chief Executive Officer. “They want the same things out of life that the rest of us do. All of us at One Sky are working hard to make sure that happens, but also know that we could not do it without the support of those special individuals and organizations who understand and want to help in their own way to improve that inclusion.”
“This year also marks the 35th year that One Sky Community Services has been supporting and providing services to individuals with Developmental Disabilities throughout most of Rockingham County. Our mission has and continues to be recognizing and helping individuals with Alternate Abilities, focusing on what they can do, rather than what they cannot do. They just need a little extra help to achieve those dreams, and it’s our job to help them do so.  Although, we have a number of challenges to deal with, we will never allow them to compromise our mission and dedication to those we serve,” stated Chris Muns.
The keynote speaker is Collette Di Vitto of Collettey’s Cookies in Boston. Collette was born with Down Syndrome. She grew up in Connecticut, where she developed a passion for baking in high school. After high school, Collette attended Clemson University, and finished a three-year LIFE program in just two years. With characteristic sass and a strong drive to work hard and succeed, she moved to Boston, where she was sure she would find a paying job. Although she went on many job interviews, she was determined not to let rejection stop her. She decided to turn her passion for baking into a business, and founded Collettey’s Cookies.  In 2016, the Boston CBS TV affiliate featured Collette and her company on their nightly news program. She was flooded with orders. The national news picked up her story, and Collettey’s Cookies went viral. She has been featured on CNN, Good Morning America, MSNBC, Inside Edition, BBC, and many other print and television media outlets around the world. She has sold over 180,000 cookies to date and now employs 13 people, several with disabilities. Collette travels the country to share her inspiring story, and encourages people to focus on their abilities rather than what they can’t do. She was a 2017 recipient of the New Englander of the Year Award at the annual New England Council Gala in Boston where 1700 top business leaders gathered to honor such trailblazers.
