Marketing and Development Manager
Prescott Park Arts Festival, one of Portsmouth’s anchor arts nonprofit organizations, and the premier outdoor venue in the Seacoast, seeks a full time Marketing & Development Manager to join its fun, dynamic, and fast- paced team. Founded in 1974, PPAF is a cultural leader in the Seacoast, reaching over 150,000 people annually through its 80+ events, all of which are offered for an optional, suggested donation in Portsmouth’s beautiful downtown Prescott Park. The Festival’s annual contribution to the local economy in show and visitor related spending is estimated to be $7.5M.
Events include weekly summer concerts, food and music festivals, film and one to two fully produced musical theatre presentations. Having recently completed its first summer season under a new Executive Director who has rebuilt the staff from the ground up, the Festival is entering an exciting and pivotal time in the organization’s history. The City of Portsmouth, with whom PPAF holds a lease agreement for its use of the Park, is beginning the implementation of its Prescott Park Master Plan which calls for massive park renovations, infrastructure upgrades, and a new performance stage.
The Festival takes a “work hard, play hard” approach with equally important goals of providing the highest quality art and educational programming while maintaining a fun, inclusive organizational culture that places a premium on caring for its most valuable asset, its people. The overused, but in this case accurate term, small but mighty, is often attributed to the PPAF staff. And indeed, it takes a certain amount of scrappiness and ability to think on one’s feet and problem-solve to be successful. The pace is fast year-round, but is undeniably more intense in the 8-10 weeks leading up to, and during, the 10-week summer season. About the Position The Marketing & Development Manager will split their time between marketing and relationship management/revenue generation, and will be an essential member of the Festival’s core, year-round staff of seven. Reporting to the Executive Director, and working closely with the Development Director, the position, as currently written, is a new one for PPAF. A staff member dedicated to marketing fills a key organizational need, and as the Festival’s marketing strategy takes shape, the position holds significant room for growth and professional development for the right candidate.
The position requires a highly organized and passionate self-starter with impeccable attention to detail and excellent writing skills. The selected applicant will develop and implement the Festival’s marketing plan to both tell the story of PPAF to the community, and assist with fundraising and individual giving. Excellent interpersonal, donor stewardship, and relationship-building skills are an absolute must. The successful candidate will manage the Festival’s highly visible social media platforms, build and develop relationships with graphic designers to create exciting and compelling marketing collateral, and assist in the development of messaging for organizational priorities. They will also assist in the execution of revenue generating activities like soliciting ads for PPAFs summer and winter playbills.
This is a salaried, full time, year-round position.
RESPONSIBILITIES ? Work with the Executive Director and the board in a rebranding effort that helps convey a new approach to engaging with neighbors, city staff, and the community as a whole ? Develop and implement the Festival’s marketing plan that will tell the story of the Festival to all stakeholders in the community, e.g. patrons, members, donors, sponsors ? With the Development Director, develop and design all fundraising materials including season and special event sponsorship brochures, online campaigns, individual donor solicitations, etc. ? Contribute and assist in coordination of special fundraising events ? Cultivate and steward ongoing relationships with major individual donors and sponsors to include servicing corporate contributors through effective management of sponsor benefits ? With guidance from Festival leadership, plan and execute PPAF’s digital marketing strategy, including social media ? Assist in managing relationships with freelance graphic designers, photographers and/or volunteers in marketing or communications fields to develop collateral, graphics and multi-media marketing content in timely fashion, e.g. season playbill, concert series program, event posters, onsite signage, print ads, web and social media templates ? Manage content on the Festival’s website ? Work with Festival staff to collect data and collateral to assist in assembling and tracking grant reports for all foundation giving as well as for marketing purposes ? Manage all email marketing for in-season activities, year-round events, and fundraising ? Take the lead in soliciting local businesses for playbill advertising ? Write press releases and other marketing materials announcing shows, community partnerships, or other organizational news and priorities QUALIFICATIONS ? 3-5 years of development and/or marketing experience required ? Must be Google analytics certified or willing to obtain certification ? Excellent interpersonal, communication and writing skills, and ability to present to diverse audiences ? Strong organizational skills and attention to detail ? Ability to work independently and as a member of a team ? Must be creative, flexible, collaborative, and have a great sense of humor ? Knowledge of social media ? Track record in fundraising including individual, corporate, or foundation giving as well as managing special events a plus ? Ability and willingness to work some nights and weekends, especially during summer season ? Experience with database management and/or Adobe creative suite a plus, but openness to learn new programs required There is some flexibility regarding work location when the Festival is out of season, but from April-October, this position will be based onsite in Portsmouth.
