Strawbery Banke invites the community to 'Run Through History' at the Half-Kilometer event Jan. 15

PORTSMOUTH—Strawbery Banke is holding a “Run Through History” Half-Kilometer event Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022, at 1 p.m. Runners and walkers of all abilities experience 260 years of architectural heritage in one loop of the Museum’s historic campus. Registration is $20 per person and benefits the Museum’s “History Within Reach” program, covering school-trip admission and transportation costs for economically underserved K-12 schools. to economically underserved schools. “The idea for the half-kilometer run came out of a brainstorming session as a part of ‘Wintertide Portsmouth’, a citywide effort spearheaded by the Chamber Collaborative of Greater Portsmouth to activate Portsmouth as a winter city”, said Anne Weidman, Museum Trustee. “Wintertide Portsmouth events will be happening all over the city on Jan. 15 and a comprehensive calendar of events can be found at www.goportsmouthnh.com/winter-portsmouth/
Half-k participants are encouraged to wear historical costumes and bring a watch for self-timing. The half-kilometer loop begins near the circa 1695 Sherburne House and ends at a festive finish line by the 1955 interpretation of the Shapley Drisco House. All participants receive a commemorative event sticker and swag bag. Additionally, DJ Skooch spins musical favorites as runners and walkers proceed through and return from the route.
The “History Within Reach” scholarship program provides experiential-learning workshops to economically underserved K-12 schools in NH, ME, and MA. These interactive learning experiences, which meet state and national curriculum standards, are offered at no cost to Title 1 schools and those recovering from financial hardship in the wake of the pandemic.
