    Description

ASSERTIONS AND NEGATIONS - DENISE MANSEAU
Line, whether drawn, painted or cut, printed, traced or implied, is the scaffold upon which of much of Denise Manseau’s work is constructed.  Her paintings and drawings, as well as cut paper structures, are layered and meticulously worked to create spatial depth and fragile presence that invites long contemplation. Manseau comments, “My work evolves ...in a progression of assertions and negations—eventually stumbling upon beauty hidden within the broken rhythm of discord.”

Denise Manseau is a Massachusetts based artist whose work investigates the nature of transitory relationships in the environment. Manseau received her BFA from the University of Massachusetts Lowell and MFA from Massachusetts College of Art. Manseau has been awarded residencies at Haystack Open Studio, Vermont Studio Center and Monasterace, Italy. Her work has been selected for exhibitions in museums and galleries including The ICA, Boston, Danforth Museum of Art, Framingham, The Painting Center, New York, Monasterace Museo, Italy and Hillyer Art Space for International Artists, Washington DC. Currently, a selection of her prints can be viewed in the Boston Drawing Project at Carroll and Sons.

    ENTANGLEMENT - SAMANTHA JONES
For her “Entanglement” exhibit, Samantha Jones will create a site specific installation in the 3S gallery, utilizing its cubic volume to envelop the viewer in a cacophonous mix of light and color that navigates the beautiful and treacherous space between image and form.

Jones comments on the inspiration for her work, “I have been thinking about how the sublime for the Industrial Age was the horizon/vastness of nature (as evidenced by the panorama), and for the 20th Century it was space (Carl Sagan, Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey). I see the sublime of our current age as that of the quantum multiverse, which thrusts each of us into a perpetual state of collapsing spacetime.”

“In a multiverse where everything can potentially exist simultaneously, the individual becomes responsible for all perspective. As one perceives, moments collapse from potentiality into experience- a constancy of violent events, which is the source of our individual and collective anxiety. No longer is the problem about a lack of agency, but being thrust into the center of it...”

Jones received her MFA from Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia. She is fascinated by the dialogue between the urban and wild, pairing industrial and synthetic materials with a baroque temperament in an attempt to render visible the mutating architecture of interior experience. Drawing in space, she employs transparency, mark, and projected shadow to produce work that can only live between dimensions, inextricable from either the two dimensional image or the three dimensional form. She currently lives on the coast of Maine, and continues to exhibit her work throughout New England, Philadelphia, and New York.
