Albacore Park, 600 Market Street, a National Historic Landmark Site and Museum in Portsmouth, New Hampshire announces its annual Navy History Day on Saturday, September 14, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Navy History Day was inaugurated in 1922 by the Navy League of the United States and over the years, has come to honor all branches of service within the Department of the Navy. Its historical origins go back to Theodore Roosevelt as much of his life was devoted to establishing a sound naval policy for the United States of America. According to Executive Director, Patricia Violette, “Originally held in October of each year, Navy History Day provides a valuable means for fostering a better understanding of the Navy and its work. Navy History Day has developed into a day of honor and celebration of one our nation’s oldest military protectors. In addition, we are honoring the USS New Mexico currently at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.”
This year’s theme is ‘Portsmouth Built Submarines’ and some highlights of the Shipyard’s history of submarine construction will on view in the Museum Gallery. The New Hampshire Sea Cadets will kick off the event with a pinning ceremony to follow with author discussions and book signings with Rodney Watterson, Michael Mitchell, and Denise Brown; children’s face painting with air brush tattoos provided by Trading Faces, and food and beverages from Kerry’s Culinary Creations. You will meet many representatives from organizations such as the Friends of Albacore, Wright Museum, USS Constitution Museum, Kittery Historical and Naval Museum, as well as various military re-enactment groups. There will also be Sea Perch remote control sub demonstrations, toy submarine races and so much more. “Join us for a day of historic fun!” said Violette, “The Albacore will feature “Stories Around the Scope” with former Albacore Crewmen. New this year is our “Eating Underwater” exhibit and you will hear wonderful underwater stories of foods and meals served on board submarines Albacore staffer Joe Afienko, who served on board various submarines in food service. In addition, we also intend to feature some unannounced surprises that you won’t want to miss!”
