  • City of Portsmouth NH announces transition to new 'portsmouthnh.gov' domain

PORTSMOUTH – The City of Portsmouth is transitioning its official website domain and email from" cityofportsmouth.com" to "portsmouthnh.gov." Email services will be migrated first, on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025, with the website to follow on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2025.

This change is part of the City's ongoing efforts to enhance online security, trust, and user experience for its residents and visitors.

For over a year the City has worked with the State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program to assist with this change. The New Hampshire Public Risk Management Exchange (PRIMEX), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) have recommended that all government agencies migrate to a .gov web domain to protect against cyber threats and gain the advantage of additional cyber services.
The transition from .com to .gov will bring the following changes for current website users:
    • Users who visit the old .com site will be redirected to the new .gov site.
    • Users should update their bookmarks to the new .gov domain. Additionally, websites that link to the City's site will need to update their links.
    • Email addresses of City staff will be updated to the new .gov domain. During a transition period, the old .com email addresses will forward messages to the new address.
    • The City has begun posting announcements about this change on the website and via social media. Support will be available to assist users with any questions or issues they might encounter.
Domains reserved specifically for government organizations offer important advantages related to credibility, trust, and clarity of purpose. For example, a .gov domain is exclusively available to government entities. That means the City can reduce the risk of fraudulent websites attempting to impersonate the City with a diversionary website. They also provide a clear and trusted channel for accessing government services, information, and resources, and give the City access to support, services, and resources designed for government websites.

Additionally, switching to a .gov domain demonstrates the City’s commitment to compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, including accessibility standards, data privacy regulations, and transparency mandates.
