  • C&J to Roll Out Fee-Based Parking in Portsmouth and Dover Locations Starting Jan. 13, 2025

PORTSMOUTH – C&J Bus Lines, a leading provider of transportation services in New England, is announcing the implementation of fee-based parking at our Portsmouth and Dover locations, beginning Jan. 13, 2025. This move marks an important step forward in enhancing security, managing parking availability, and ensuring that C&J’s facilities meet the highest standards of quality and convenience for all riders.

C&J will implement key initiatives, including:

    • Fee-Based Parking Rollout: A $4 per day fee at Portsmouth and Dover terminals to address parking misuse, improve accessibility, fund terminal upgrades, and ensure consistent experiences between all C&Js facilities.
    • Expanded Services: Immediate service enhancements, including the return of the 1:10 a.m. departure from Boston Logan Airport, real-time bus-tracking software, and increased service frequency in early 2025.
    • Infrastructure Modernization: Upgrades to the Portsmouth Transportation Center, such as improved traffic flow, radial security camera systems, and a modernized terminal interior, to create a seamless and enjoyable travel experience.
    • Enhanced Security: Investments in gated lots, additional cameras, and emergency call systems to ensure rider safety and peace of mind.
    • Community Investment: A portion of these fees will support local and state programs, contributing to the communities we proudly serve.

    Commitment to New Hampshire Communities

C&J is a family-operated business with fifty-five years of service and community impact in New Hampshire. C&J offers 130 jobs, supports local charitable organizations, and invests in its employees. C&J has accomplished this by delivering safe, reliable, and customer-focused transportation, and introducing secure fee-based parking is no exception.

Free parking at C&J’s terminals has posed several challenges, including misuse such as long-term vehicle storage, improper disposal, and even instances of individuals residing in vehicles on-site. By transitioning to paid parking—a model successfully implemented at C&J’s Seabrook terminal since 2020—C&J will address these issues while ensuring spaces are available for those who need them most.

“Paid parking is already the standard at most major transportation hubs, many of which aren’t open twenty-four-hours a day like C&J” said Jalbert. “Our affordable $4 daily rate reflects our commitment to delivering a premium experience while funding critical upgrades and services for our customers including full-lot repaving, improved lighting, security systems, and facility remodel. We will continue to evaluate ways to offer added value for our travelers.”

Public-Private Partnership to Drive Innovation and Accessibility

Secure fee-based parking will be supported through a Public-Private Partnership (P3) agreement with the New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT). This collaborative process leverages private investment to improve critical transportation infrastructure in New Hampshire. Following the success of similar partnerships, such as the Hooksett Welcome Centers, this reduces upfront costs and preserves essential budget resources for other infrastructure priorities. C&J will take on capital investments, routine maintenance, and enhanced facilities security, exemplifying a win-win model for taxpayers, travelers, and the business community.

“We are excited about our future partnership with C&J,” said Andre Briere, Deputy Commissioner of NHDOT. “This agreement demonstrates how public-private collaboration can deliver innovative solutions to meet public needs. By expanding services, improving infrastructure, and enhancing facilities, we invest in the future of transportation and the communities we proudly serve.”
